Alliums - Good and Good for You

Join UC Master Gardener Janet Miller as she takes us through an exploration of this fascinating vegetable.  Alliums, with their distinctive flavors and slew of nutritional benefits, make other vegetables look lazy.  Adding their earthy, pungent sweetness is one of the simplest ways to transform any dish, from an omelet to pasta.  And, the sulfides in these bulbs (which are responsible for their strong smells and flavors) will ward off more than just the characters on True Blood.  Vegetables in the allium family have been linked to reduced risk for breast and colon cancers and contain a number of antioxidants, such as vitamin C and quercetin, which may have disease-thwarting and age-averting properties.

About Our Garden

Our Garden is a public demonstration garden of the UC Master Gardener Program of Contra Costa County, located in Walnut Creek at the corner of North Wiget Lane and Shadelands Drive, just off Ygnacio Valley Road. From April through October, weekly speakers present a variety of information on edibles gardening and home gardening in general.

UC Master Gardeners of Contra Costa maintain the garden and interface with the general public. We encourage you to bring in your home and garden questions and talk with a UC Master Gardener at the Ask a Master Gardener Table (9 am to Noon)!
