Growing Food in Lake Tahoe—Potatoes & Onions. Potatoes were one of the few vegetables known to be grown at Lake Tahoe (Glenbrook House) during pioneer times, with reports circulated that our potatoes were superior to any grown in California! The potato, native to the Andes is well suited to our climate. Interesting varieties have been selected for our trials, including blue, red and several fingerling types. Our onion selections are a continuation of our two season effort to identify Alliums suitable for home gardens it the Tahoe/Truckee area.
