DAVIS -- New cost of production studies for strawberries grown in the Central Coast-Monterey and Santa Cruz counties, the Southern Coast-Santa Barbara County, and the Southern Coast-Ventura County are now available from the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE). The Central Coast study focuses on strawberry production for the fresh market while the Southern Coast studies cover production for both the fresh and freezer markets. Each analysis is based upon a hypothetical strawberry farm using practices common in the respective region. Farm advisors, researchers, growers, farm accountants, pest control advisers, consultants and other agricultural associates including the California Strawberry Commission provided input and reviews. Assumptions used to identify current costs for the crops, material inputs, cash and non-cash overhead in each study are described. A ranging analysis table shows profits over a range of prices and yields. Other tables show the monthly cash costs, the costs and returns per acre, hourly equipment costs, and the whole farm annual equipment, investment, and business overhead costs. The three studies -- Sample Costs to Produce Strawberries, Central Coast; Sample Costs to Produce Strawberries, Southern Coast, Santa Barbara County; and Sample Costs to Produce Strawberries, Southern Coast, Ventura County -- are available online at http://coststudies.ucdavis.edu, or can be ordered from the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, University of California, One Shields Avenue, Davis, CA 95616, by phone at (530) 752-4424 and the local UC Cooperative Extension offices. A $3 handling fee is charged for each ordered report. The three studies were prepared by Karen M. Klonsky, UCCE specialist, and Richard L. De Moura, research associate, Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics. In addition Eta Takele, UCCE area farm advisor, southern region participated in both Southern Coast studies.
