Following a search process, I have decided not to fill the Youth, Families and Communities (YFC) Director position at the present time. This decision did not come easily because we were successful in attracting a number of outstanding candidates, each of whom would bring different experiences and perspectives to the position.
Given the current search for a Vice Provost of Statewide Programs and Strategic Initiatives, with whom the YFC Director would work closely, coupled with our need (following Chris Greer's announcement yesterday) to recruit for a new Vice Provost for Cooperative Extension, and the strategic planning process that ANR has just begun, we have decided to take time to re-assess the needs of the YFC programs....
After much deliberation, I have decided to step down as UC ANR vice provost of Cooperative Extension to return to the field. I will be transitioning to the role of area Integrated Pest Management Cooperative Extension advisor, with responsibilities in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura, effective Jan. 1, 2017.
Over the next couple of months, I will work closely with Associate Vice President Wendy Powers and the Academic Human Resources unit to recruit and appoint the next vice provost of Cooperative Extension. Recently I had the opportunity to meet with President Napolitano to review accomplishments and goals for ANR. Following a very upbeat and encouraging conversation, the president requested that ANR's leadership complete a more detailed five-year strategic plan. The draft is due at the end of October, with the final document due in December.
While this is a timely and useful exercise for the division, it comes with a very challenging timeline. The 2025 Strategic Vision will guide our work, and where strategic plans already exist within the statewide programs, strategic initiatives, Research and Extension Centers, budget plans, etc., we will draw from these plans.

In July 2014, UC President Janet Napolitano launched the UC Global Food Initiative (GFI) and ANR continues to play a major role in the GFI. Two new examples are a special issue of California Agriculture that is in the planning stages and a food-research video competition for UC students that the Nutrition Policy Institute is co-sponsoring. A call has gone out UC systemwide to participate in these projects.

This is to inform you of changes to the timing of final pay when an employee retires or voluntarily resigns from an ANR position.
Previously, University practice was to pay out final wages within 72 hours of the employee's last day at work. ANR will now issue final wages with the employee's next regular payday. This change is being applied across the UC system; it is not specific to ANR or UC Davis.
