did the bee sting and the walk away leaving that long connective material? or does it "shoot its stinger?"

This honey bee was in the act of defending her colony at the time of this sting. That's the abdominal tissue trailing, that is, being pulled out as it's trying to buzz off. Worker bees die after stinging. The sting is like a barbed hook.
