Hey, I have to say I don't agree with many of these picks for the Santa Cruz / Monterey area. Here is a much more regionally accurate list : http://cesantacruz.ucanr.edu/files/130451.pdf

This list is clearly meant for the Southwest desert areas. I would never plant tomatoes, eggplant or peppers this time of year. Summer squash is dicey because it may begin to mildew just as the fruit is coming on as the nights get cooler. I think August is early for planting carrots and salad greens unless it's done in shade.

August WOULD be the time I would start cabbage family plants like broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage from seed in flats for transplanting in Sept/Oct.

Hi Delise,

Yes, you are correct. I was trying to recycle an old post to have something new up on the blog but it was a poor choice. Thanks for the link to a better list for what we in the Central Coast region should be planting in August.

I question using Mother Earth News as a resource over the California Master Gardener Handbook.

Hi Ben,

Yes, you are right. As the person running the blog I was recycling an old post and it appears not to be appropriate for our region. Sorry about that. I will do better in the future.
