Did you know that alfalfa grown in CA ranks as the #2 commodity in the US (based on the 2011/2012 CDFA Agricultural Statistics Review)? It is one of the highest acreage crops in the state and best forage plant in terms of yield and quality. Alfalfa is also being used as a cover crop at several RECs to provide benefits to the soil since it is a nitrogen fixer.
Research on alfalfa has been conducted at the Intermountain, Kearney, West Side and Desert Research and Extension Centers over the past 20 years. Results of the research are focusing on improving yield, quality and testing herbicides and alternatives to traditional irrigation techniques.
