The Gulf Fritillary is my favorite butterfly to raise. It is the easiest of all and very rewarding. I wonder if some of its success is do to people bringing it inside to rear in the winter. I think of them as a tropical butterfly, and yet they do surprisingly well in this area (Berkeley) and I see adults all winter. I rear them to insure that they will continue to lay eggs in my yard. In fact, I have three caterpillars in my kitchen right now. They are the best classroom pet of all, even though they are not domesticated.
