Youth all over Placer County had the opportunity to come together the week of July 14th-19th to learn, share, and make wonderful memories at the annual Placer County 4-H Summer Camp at Woodchuck Flat. The Placer/Nevada Joint Camp Facilities have been being leased from the Tahoe National Forest since the 1940s. With an ever-changing world, Placer County 4-H has continued to give youth from all backgrounds the opportunity to experience Summer Camp. Both regular members and non-members were given the opportunity to experience a six-day, five-night low-cost Summer Camp.
The unique aspect about Placer County 4-H Summer Camp is that it is all youth- and volunteer-driven. Adult volunteers spend three to four months prior to camp setting up the facilities, while teen camp counselors work for six months training and preparing to not only be counselors, but also mentors to all the youth campers that attend each year.
There are not many opportunities for teens and youth to have peer-to-peer mentoring as they do at Summer Camp, and 4-H is proud to offer such a program. Youth that attend Summer Camp are able to participate in numerous hikes, archery, kayaking, swimming, a high-wire ropes course, arts and crafts, and making friendships that last for a lifetime.
Placer County 4-H Summer Camp is offered to youth ages 9 to 19 years old, with counselor opportunities for interested teens 14 to 19 years old. Finally, Summer Camp may be over for this year, but the regular 4-H program year 2014-2015 is now underway with online enrollment opening on August 1st.
