Interesting--what time of year would the citrus canopy be cut back?
Similar water water savings, 30% less canopy reduces water requirements by 1/2?
Are there consequences from debulking the leaves that come back to weaken the tree in following seasons? Thanks!

Leesa,

I believe these figures come from a trial I did some years ago in citrus. The canopy was pruned in March. I found that removal of 50% of the canopy reduced citrus ET by about 50%. Canopy removal involved topping, hedging, and removal of several large scaffold branches in the previously 20 + ft tall trees. Yield was greatly impacted, and many fruit grew too large to be of commercial value as fresh fruit for the table. The trees produced a proliferation of undesirable new shoot growth next season and water use increased as the canopy regrew.
