Placer County 4-H Sheep Coordinator Group held their first Sheep Field Day on January 24th at the Gold Country Fairgrounds. 4-H, FFA, and interested members in the sheep industry were able to come together and learn from highly qualified area speakers about raising sheep and the sheep business. Speakers highlighted topics of genetics and artificial insemination by Karin Fish of Fish Lambs, feed and nutrition by Bar Ale Feed, dairy sheep by Susan Mentze of the California Sheep Commission, carcass evaluation by Wolfpack Meats of the University of Nevada, and livestock judging by Billy Cox.
In conjunction to a morning of wonderful speakers, participants were able to have a Lamb Shepard's Pie prepared by Chef Ty Rowe of Bootleggers Restaurant with lamb from Sinclair Family Farms.
Karin Sinclair and Tina Pourfathi of Sinclair Family Farms and Sinclair Concrete are lead coordinators for the Placer County 4-H Sheep Coordinator Group and organized the Sheep Field Day. Additionally, they are excited to offer another field day later this spring to help youth prepare their lambs for Placer County Fair and Gold Country Fair.
Placer County 4-H is a strong advocate of hands-on learning, and wants to thank all that assisted in the implementation of the first field day being offered in many years. If you are interested in learning more about the Sheep Coordinator Group and Placer County 4-H please visit the links below:
