Hi Chris - i was surprised to see that some flowers do not supply pollen - dont most flowers have pollen - ie even unisexual incomplete female flowers still often have a male flower counterpart... is it just that the pollen is inaccessible to the bees? or that they do not want it for some reason? Is there any kind of master list of plants that could be consulted to make sure my pollinator garden has a balanced supply of nectar and pollen? (i have quite a few salvias, which seem like maybe they are only nectar, so now im worried...) thanks for any advice...

Hi Kim, the answer is "all of the above." Some plants have inaccessible or low quality (i.e. low protein content) pollen while others, such as sterile hybrids, don't produce pollen. An example of the latter are the catmint hybrids. They are great nectar sources and well-used by bees, but pairing them with a pollen source creates a better bee garden.

You'll find several plant lists, including a list of all plants in the Haven, on our web site. Lists include information on pollen and nectar resources as well as bloom time. I'm glad this information is helpful. I continue to add more information to our plant list; it now includes details on bloom time, bee resources provided by each plant, water needs, and Sunset growing zones. Hope this helps: https://hhbhgarden.ucdavis.edu/BeeGardeningResources
