Great post Lynn! You offered a balanced perspective on an increasingly important topic. In your opinion, what are some useful strategies for initiating proactive conversations about current agricultural practices?

It appears that social media is the preferred outlet for disseminating information and engaging audiences; however, I find it can be overflowing with too much at times. What are your thoughts?

Oh yes, social media is a wonderful/terrible place! I do like Twitter as it allows me to spread info that I find worthwhile and challenge that which I disagree with. You do need to develop a very thick skin, I think; many people love to do nothing more that hurt other people, especially when they can do it anonymously.

As to initiating proactive conversations...I'm still learning. I think that asking people questions to determine if there would be any situation in which they would change their opinion about a topic is a good idea. We should all be willing to understand the limits to our beliefs.

Social media can, indeed, be overwhelming. I try to stick to a very small number of topics and not get bogged down on others, even I have have some passion about those as well. I find there are plenty of good science based groups on every topic imaginable so I don't feel like I need to be engaging on everything. I just focus on getting some good info out to people knowing I can't change the minds of people who are entrenched in their thinking who are also the most vocal, but others in the background may learn something.
