Thank you so much for this vivid and insightful article. I came back from a walk with my dog this evening, slipped off my shoes (now barefoot) and proceeded to the kitchen to get us both some water. I was sure I had stepped on glass when I felt sudden sharp pain on my second toe of my right foot. The immediate sting occurred between my big toe and my second toe. What could've caused it? Low and behold a dead bee lays on the floor. Uncanny! But also Ouch, Ouch, Ouch! (Still hurts as I type this). Since I have been searching the Internet for a reason how and why this is possible. I appreciate your description because we shared the same sentiment but I was just probably more confused (didn't know what a scrub jay was - guessed it was a bird with an eclectic diet.. or OCD). One as much is I love Google--these Wikipedia results just don't do it for me when I'm home alone (minus dog) and stung for the first time in 32 years by a dead bee (or a live/excised one for that matter). I found solace reading this post. Thanks again!
