What do you think about the milkweed pollinia controversy for bees - I have read articles saying the waxy mass of pollen stick to bees and can sometimes kill them... I've read other articles saying it is not a big deal. I have milkweed and a hive in my backyard - occasionally I see bees with pollinia stuck to them they are busy trying to remove...

I've been watching dozens and dozens of honey bees over the last couple of months on the milkweed--no problem--but have seen about six get stuck. I managed to lift several off with a toothpick to free them. A couple died when they couldn't free themselves; I found them dead in the morning with their tongues protruding. (And watched other bees nectar around the corpses.)

Nice Kathy!

Was this photographed in the Arb on the plants by Environ. Hort?

Thanks. I took these images in our little pollinator garden in Vacaville, Calif. It's rare for the male Valley carpenter bees to visit. I've seen them on our honeysuckle, milkweed and African blue basil, but mostly the milkweed.
