On a Vacaville 100+ degree Monday recently, my husband and I headed to Napa and Sonoma to take care of some business and to get out of the heat. It was in the high 80's there, perfect weather to have lunch outdoors at Oxbow in Napa and to check out Cornerstone Sunset gardens in Sonoma. When Sunset moved from Menlo Park, they left approximately 3000 square feet of beautiful landscaping to a developer who bought the property. In Sonoma, Sunset has 11,000 square feet abutting vineyards all around. The space is divided into 18 gardens each created by a different designer and each with a different theme. The gardens are connected largely by decomposed granite pathways and separated by moon gates and hedges. Some of the gardens are meant for contemplation and others for function and aesthetics. Some gardens have signage listing the plants in that area. The Farm is packed with all kinds of edibles, fruit trees, tomatoes and herbs. Another garden contains a metal wishing tree covered with tied-off tapes attached to chains hanging from the tree. Visitors are encouraged to write their own wishes on colorful, shiny tape (provided) and attach it to the chains. One garden is dedicated to farmworkers. The newest garden is my favorite. It is a pollinator garden with a winding decomposed granite pathway and lots of pollinator-attractors. I can't wait to return and see the progression of this garden as it matures.
