Hi
common purslane normally has a light requirement for germination but in July it germinates without inhibition (see Baskin and Baskin papers). In lettuce we learned that preemergence herbicides are best for purslane - don't let it emerge. after it emerges it is a tough weed to control. Not sure of the best pre herbicide to recommend mid summer, but that would be the best option.
thanks for the interesting subject!

Thanks, Steve and Barry, for your feedback. Steve - agreed. Trying to prevent emergence is probably the best management. In the current situation, however, where the weeds are already emerged, hopefully the article provides some context for why it's a problem and a possible management option. Barry - yes, we have heard that common purslane getting into hay is more than just a local problem. Thanks for providing scope!
