You mention that the only costs associated with your guardian dogs are food and vet bills, but wasn't it is big investment up front to purchase and train the dogs?

Absolutely! Dog food and vet bills are ongoing costs, while the acquisition costs are a capital expense. That said, depreciation is a significant cost component for livestock guardian dogs.
