Interesting discussion - I hadn't heard of the carmine mite, but here on the East Coast we talk about the 2-spotted spider mite having a reddish over-wintering morph. I wonder if this morph only appears in particularly cold winters in California?

Thanks for your interest in this Esther. Yes, we do get the reddish overwintering morphs also, but they are easier to identify as twospot. These carmine mites are trickier, they seem to be larger (although that might be an illusion because of the strong color) and very very red.
