I liken the tolerance for this activity (abusive cultivation and use of marijuana) to the situation we face with respect to alcohol. There is a dangerous aura around alcohol use; being intoxicated is considered funny by our culture at large. This is in spite of the fact that it ruins lives, saps resources and kills many innocent people. Growing and using pot is still considered funny in many quarters. We snicker at its growth and use. Some of this is undoubtedly rooted in the illegality of its cultivation and use. My father, who was born in 1905, was one of, if not the, most honest people I have ever known. However, he used to tell me about how much fun he and his friends had in speakeasys during prohibition. The illegality of marijuana has undermined respect of its use and abuse in the same way that prohibition bred similar disrespect for alcohol and its use and abuse; a problem we still suffer from 90 years on.

Thank you Greg for bringing this discussion out of the shadows. The serious environmental impacts of illegal cultivation very often go unrecognized and I really appreciate your efforts to raise awareness.

That's too bad! With the legalization of marijuana, the number of cannabis growers and even marijuana dispensary owners will increase. These growers should still make an effort not to violate the laws of the environment. They should still practice safe growing, so that the environment will not be destroyed or polluted.
