Mendocino County is home to over 400 species of birds that have been observed within the county's accepted borders (includes many square miles of ocean waters). All of these birds can be lumped into a handful of categories or groups depending upon their time of occurrence. Examples are: vagrants, summer breeders, fall migrants, year-round residents, etc.
One of the UC Hopland Research & Extension Center's year-round resident bird species is the Bewick's Wren (Thryomanes bewickii), a busy little bird found in brushy thickets, brushpiles, dense riparian areas, and chaparral brushland. Their variable high note buzzes and warbles sometimes gives their location away... long before you see the sideways-flitting tail or the long white eyebrow.
