Happy Easter! This week on In the Garden with UC Master Gardeners, the subject is “Urban Forest”. UC Master Gardener Ann Liu is back with a reprise of a powerful, practical, and fact-filled interview with an expert in the field of growing trees in a city setting.
Ann speaks with Michael Palat, a professional with West Coast Arborists overseeing municipal contracts in So. Orange and San Diego Counties. Mr. Palat will guide you through the checklist of tree choices, tree installation, proper pruning techniques, and the subject of Tree Ordinances – one of the tools to attain a successful Urban Forest in your city.
Mid-show will be a live discussion about an emerging Invasive species of tree locally called “Tree of Heaven” (Ailanthus altissuma). It is the host plant of the Spotted Lantern Fly currently NOT in California but is spreading from the East coast to parts of the Midwest. The host plant is common in California so to avoid a devastating invasion of the insect, the “Tree of Heaven” must be located and eradicated. Master Gardeners throughout the state are learning how to spot them and report their locations.
