4-H Presentations
Believe it or not it’s not too soon to be thinking about Sonoma County Presentation Day! Sonoma County’s Presentation Day is scheduled for Saturday, February 2, 2013. All members are encouraged to participate!
What is a 4-H presentation?
A presentation is a method used to communicate an idea by showing and/or telling. It can be a demonstration or a talk that uses posters and other visual aids. A 4-H Presentation helps you learn to:
- Research a subject
- Organize ideas in a logical order
- Be a teacher and practice public speaking skills
Why do a 4-H presentation?
As you participate in projects, you collect information and ideas that can be shared with others. This sharing of information is part of the process of learning. Teaching project skills in a presentation takes advanced skills and a deeper understanding of what you have learned.
By giving presentations you learn more, gain recognition and obtain important communication skills activities for your record book! You have the opportunity to do presentations at project meetings, club meetings and at County Presentation Day.
Presentations are required for you to earn your Stars in the 4-H Program.
What do I do?
Speakers prepare for presentations by giving talks to project groups and community club meetings, practicing skills learned in a project, and observing other people giving presentations. You can get ideas for presentations from many different sources. The first place to start is with your project leaders. They know what you have learned in your project and what you might enjoy presenting. Your community club leader also can be a source of ideas.
Presentations are not just demonstrations. You have many options ranging from traditional demonstrations to problem solving for senior members. All of the various presentation styles require similar skills, but are designed to meet the interests and age-appropriate levels of the member. No style of presentation is better than any other. Choose the style that best fits you for your first presentation and then try other styles as you advance in 4-H.
Every 4-H member is encouraged to give a presentation each year. Show what you've learned; give a presentation!
Visit http://www.ca4h.org/Projects/Leadership/PublicSpeaking to learn more and to find the 4-H Presentation Manual.
How Do I Register?
Registration is simple and takes only a few minutes. Visit the county 4-H website at http://cesonoma.ucanr.edu/Youth_Development/ to register online before January 25, 2013 or complete a registration form and mail it no later than January 21, 2013. You will receive a confirmation e-mail or letter.
Dear 4-H Clubs and Projects,
Attached is the new 4-H Center Booking Policy. Please review the new booking policy and feel free to contact us with any questions and concerns at the 4-H Foundation office 707-584-9284.

Please call her at your soonest convenience to schedule a quick run through at 707-584-9284 or via email at 4-hfoundation@sbcglobal.net . From Bonnie VanAnda:
When my husband and I attended the Grand Opening of the Family Justice Center (F.J.C.), I knew I wanted to do something to help those families in crises. I applied and received a grant of $1000.00 from Cal. Youth Dev. Prog. to make blankets for the (F.J.C.). I organized a team of 4-H teens and we asked our 4-H community if they would help to make 100 blankets by December for those families in crises. By making these blankets, we hope that those who receive them will remain hopeful that their future can be brighter, knowing others do care.
My team and I, Jolene Corcoran, Roy Van Anda and Heather Tucker want to thank the 4-H community for their help making these blankets, Lunardi Electric for their donation of fabric and many others from the 4-H community who donated fabric, Beverly’s in Santa Rosa for the many pink bags they donated for the blankets and their wonderful service, and from the F.J.C., Gloria M. Eurotas, Interim Executive Director and Daniel Del Monte, and the Administrative Aide for their time coordinating and all those who gave of their time to help those in need.
This coming Sunday the 16th from 12 to 2pm we will have a walk thru of the F.J.C. with the Interim Director and the Admin. Aide. We will also deliver the blankets we have made. For those in the 4-H community who are interested in a tour of what the F.J.C. is all about please come and see. They provide many services for people in our community and it is good to know what they do. If you are interested in this walk thru please call Bonnie Van Anda at 829-3919. It is important that I have an idea of how many people are interested in being a part of this community service so I can inform the F.J.C. Thank you in advance for taking the time out of your Holiday time to become informed and hopefully more involved in our community.

Last one for this year!
SEE YOU WEDNESDAY NIGHT 7:00pm at the 4-H Center for January CCC mtg
Just a reminder…no volunteers may lead projects until they are fully enrolled. This means all paperwork completed, fees turned in, fingerprints cleared and orientation complete. Since we cannot monitor this from the office, we depend upon our Club Leaders to enforce this. Project leaders should not be leading projects until they are “active” in our system. We are working on Leader Cards so that you will have official notification that you are active in our system. Our goal is to get these to leaders by Feb CCC mtg
Call me with any questions 565-3443 Thanks to everybody!!! Judy
CountyWide shooting sports (which is Rifle) is closed until further notice. If you have a club level shooting sports project, using guns, please send me (Judy) an email and give me the following information. We are starting a new database. 1. What kind of gun, 2. Who owns the gun, 3. Where is it stored when not in use, 4.Maintenance info-how often, who is in charge of recording maintenance. Thank you
4-H Junk Drawer Robotics: a new After School Enrichment program for Sonoma Mountain Elementary School in Petaluma
In 4-H Junk Drawer Robotics, we will unleash youth creativity to create some amazing contraptions that grip, spin, fly, race, draw, make sounds and light up. The goal is to make science, engineering and technology engaging and meaningful in the lives of young people. With support from Sonoma County 4-H and Lockheed Martin, 4-H Junk Drawer Robotics is appropriate for youth age 8 and up. Activity sessions will be held on Mondays for five weeks: 1/28, 2/4, 2/11, 2/18, 2/25 and 3/4/2013. Sessions are from 3:00 - 5:00 PM. We are looking for 3-4 adult volunteers who can assist with the activities. We are also looking for teen volunteers who can help. Contact David Bell, Two Rock 4-H SET Project Leader at dbell@sfsu.edu if you are interested in participating.
If your club is planning on donating to Sandy Hook, please be aware of the State policy.
“The sympathy gifts allow for a cash contribution to an organization in memory of or in support of an individual or cause. So the club’s gift would be $75 total to the selected memorial fund that has been set up to help those affected by the events at Sandy Hook Elementary.”
Whitney Bell 4-H Analyst CA State 4-H Office
In January, each club will receive a quarterly review of the bank statements for Sept-December. Please use this review as an educational piece. Things to remember when writing checks…..an adult signature must be on the check, it cannot be two youth. In can be two unrelated adult if youth signor is not available. A person cannot sign a check that is written to themselves. Memo line must clearly state for what the check is written (I cannot decipher abbreviations) . Family members cannot sign a check written to someone in their family. No checks may be made to “Cash”. I have to be sure that the proper signors have signed each check for each club. Often I will need to check a signature, because I cannot read it. In CCC packets will be a form to help me with this. Please have each signor write their signature as it would normally be on a check, and turn it in to the office. Thanks so much! Judy
