Etaferahu Takele, Area Advisor Extension and research programs are in production economics, financial analysis and investment analysis for crop production in southern California. Hence advanced the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) mission of promoting economic prosperity in California with a goal to safeguard healthy food for all Californias and build Climate-Resilient Communities and Ecosystems. The area advisor, worked on multiple projects with commodity specialists, disciplinary specialists, and policy advisors to develop relevant crop production research that blends insights from economic theory with bottom-up insights shared by farmers. Research programs have included (i) analyzing new crops economics and potential profitability using cost of production and marketing analyses. Also assisting small farms and minority clientele in identifying high return new and specialty crops. (ii) Comparing alternative production practices analyzing profitability (iii) selecting optimum input combination from alternative production practices. (iv) analysis of the optimum irrigation levels under various water cost situations, (V) evaluating the economic feasibility of non-traditional inputs such as mulch and sludge in crop production for purpose of developing environmentally suitable use for them. Extension programs have emphasized profitable enterprise selection, financial and risk management for farm sustainability and viability. Program emphasizes a multidisciplinary team approach involving integrating scientists and economists within the UC as well as integration with other states such as the Western Region Risk Management Program.
