Water Quality, Quantity and Security

Water pic 3 pipe
Water is the life blood of California's economy. As such, water supply and its quality are critical issues facing the state's agricultural, urban, and environmental systems over the next 20 years and beyond. The initiative works in the following key areas:

  • Safe & secure Drinking water
  • Safe & Secure Surface Water
  • Safe & sustainable Groundwater
  • Holistic Water Management
The Water SI helps build our state economy, protect our natural resources, builds capacity of our people and communities and helps ensure we have safe food and drinking water.
 Emerging issues include:
  • Informing regulatory requirements (especially when the supply of water will be limited for all users and Short- and long-term climate trends will exacerbate the problems associated with water availability. Legal and regulatory decisions will have significant impacts on water use and quality among all sectors.)

  • Urban and Ag technical and regulatory responses to drought (Competition for water will intensify among agricultural, urban, and environmental users, with water being transferred from agriculture to the latter two groups)

  • Community access to safe drinking water

  • Water contaminants (Degradation of water quality will become more important as a major public issue.)

  • Meeting regulatory requirements

  • Collapsing aquifers

  • Sustainable groundwater management

Our Strategic Initiatives help unify, communicate and advocate for the work we do.
