Ploughshares Nursery

Location: Alameda

Ploughshares Nursery
Ploughshares Nursery has gained a reputation for providing the Alameda and Oakland area with quality ornamental and edible nursery plants for landscaping and gardening. The nursery is a social enterprise for the Alameda Point Collaborative (APC), a supportive housing community in Alameda. In addition to providing employment opportunities and job training to the residents of APC housing, revenue generated helps support the non-profit.

Jeff Bridges, the General Manager, believes that education plays an important role in the marketing strategy for Ploughshares. Bridges has built a devoted clientele by providing a workshop series and is planning to create demonstration gardens to inspire costumers learning to garden.

The nursery carries seeds, standard and rare varieties of fruit trees, herbs, seasonal vegetable starts, flowers, and native/drought tolerant plants. In April 2013, Ploughshares broke ground on a new building that will serve as a retail space. The green building will feature solar panels, grey water recycling, and recycled building materials.
