ANR Update

Propose a project for summer student fellowship program

Last year, UC ANR trialed a summer fellowship program in collaboration with the Department of Land, Air and Water Resources and the Planetary Health Center of Expertise at UC Davis. As a result, we had about six students doing a summer session with UC Cooperative Extension advisors. The fellowships allowed the students to get some “real world” experience and provided the advisors with support from some sharp UC student minds.

If you are interested in mentoring a student for Summer 2019, please submit your request using the following link http://ucanr.edu/survey/survey.cfm?surveynumber=26498. Funding is not required, although even modest funding raises the probability of getting a student. You may request an undergraduate and/or a graduate student.

Timelines and general process

The campus will begin matching students and opportunities in about two to three weeks for placement over the summer. Detail on the program appears below.

Advisors submit a summary of their opportunity and students submit their areas of interest. Potential matches are then identified. Before embarking on a project, the advisors and the students discuss to ensure there really is a good match.

Feel free to contact me if you have questions or I can put you in touch with one of the host advisors from 2018.

Sincerely,

Mark Bell
Vice Provost Strategic Initiatives and Statewide Programs

Summer Work Experience Program (notice sent to students)

UC Davis is now accepting applications for the 2019 Summer Work Experience Program. University of California students can gain hands-on experience working in the diverse fields of natural resources, agriculture, conservation, policy, outreach education and health. The Planetary Health Center of Expertise will match undergraduate and graduate students with a variety of opportunities provided in collaboration with the center's partners in the University of California's Agriculture and Natural Resources Cooperative Extension and the California Department of Conservation.

Fellows will be co-mentored by on-site mentors and university faculty. Summer fellow placements will launch in June 2019, however students are also strongly encouraged to participate in a preparatory course on science education and outreach during the 2019 spring quarter for academic credit. We encourage you to visit our website to learn more about the program and application process. You can also find information about our previous Summer Work Experience fellows and their projects.

Applications are due on February 15, 2019, 5:00 pm PST. Applications submitted after February 15, 2019, may be accepted if placements are available. Please send an email to planetaryhealth@ucdavis.edu with any questions.

Important UCPath update from VP Humiston

UC ANR is fast approaching the launch of UCPath. We are scheduled to go live in March, when we'll join seven other UC locations using the long-awaited human resources, payroll and benefits technology that is modernizing how we do business across the University of California. On Tuesday, January 29, I hope you will join me at 1 p.m. for the online Town Hall to discuss upcoming changes.

UCPath will allow us to streamline and standardize our payroll, benefits and human resources processes, and will provide more efficient and improved service to UC ANR employees. UC ANR's fiscal silos will be unified, improving our ability to access our financial data. It will give us improved tools for efficient hiring and management of personnel transactions. Supervisors and employees will have better access to information through new self-service web portals, and will be supported by a new customer service center, the UCPath Center in Riverside.

As we launch UCPath, we should be reminded that major change is often difficult to implement, and we may experience challenges along the way. Our project team is working closely with other UC locations and the UCPath Center to prepare to support UC ANR through the transition. Be assured that the UCPath team, both at UC ANR and at the UCPath Center, will work to resolve any issues that you may encounter.

You'll receive more information about the changes in the coming weeks. I strongly encourage everyone to take some time to learn what's happening by reading project updates and viewing demonstration videos at ucpath.ucanr.edu/, and sending any questions to UCPath@ucanr.edu.

Thanks for your support and all you do for UC ANR.

Best wishes,

Glenda Humiston
Vice President
