2018 Call for Cooperative Extension positions released

Colleagues,

ANR is committed to increasing our academic footprint for more effective deployment of Cooperative Extension (CE) specialists and advisors to address local issues with global impact. The 2018 CE Call for Positions is released, with the aim to identify positions that address programmatic gaps and emerging needs. The call, including the position proposal template, new process flowchart and timeline, and criteria are posted at http://ucanr.edu/2018callforpositions.

The advisor and specialist position proposal-development processes will be open from Feb. 8 to Sept. 15, with three phases of groups working collaboratively to develop proposals, and later phases reviewing earlier proposals to add proposals that they think are higher priority. Each proposal development phase is intended to include internal consultation and external input from ANR stakeholders to identify priority needs.

Strengthening and rebuilding the ANR network remains a top priority for ANR. Since the beginning of 2012, ANR has hired 175 academics (including advisors, specialists, project scientists, academic coordinators and administrators), and has 11 approved CE positions under recruitment in 2018 (list posted on the 2018 call web page). Through this call, we plan to add around 26 additional crucial CE positions.

As with the current recruitments, we will remain nimble with future hiring in phases over time to enable us to accomplish the search and hiring process in an orderly fashion, evaluate resources on a real-time basis, deal with unexpected changes in staffing, and address unforeseen critical gaps as they emerge. The resources released through retirements and separations continue to enable us to hire new advisors and specialists. The ANR strategic plan 2016-2020 also prioritizes strengthening partnerships to establish new co-funded positions and developing other new sources of revenue to grow the academic footprint.

Sincerely,

Wendy Powers
Associate Vice President

More than 100 CE positions proposed

Review is beginning for the 109 Cooperative Extension advisor and specialist positions submitted in response to ANR’s 2012 supplemental call for academic positions. Of those proposed, 52 are advisor positions and 57 are specialist positions. The positions remain posted on the publicly accessible site www.ucanr.edu/callforpositions. We encourage all ANR stakeholders as well as employees to offer comments and provide input. The system will remain open to collect comments on the positions until Aug. 7.

Program team leaders, county and multicounty partnership (MCP) directors and executive associate deans will evaluate the proposals and provide feedback and prioritization for Program Council’s consideration.

The program team leaders will review all position proposals (advisors and specialists) that are related to the programmatic coverage of their respective teams. MCP and county directors will review advisor positions associated with their geographic coverage and each executive associate dean will review the specialist positions that are proposed for his or her college or school.

Reviewers are being asked to consider the general description of the position, justification for the position, the issues it addresses, the role this position will play in strengthening or building the ANR continuum, the support that will be provided and the proposed location for the position.

Reviews are scheduled to conclude on Aug. 7 and Program Council will have their initial discussion of all feedback and prioritizations during their Sept. 4–5 meeting. In the late fall, VP Allen-Diaz will announce the positions approved for recruitment.

ANR releases supplemental call for positions

Colleagues,

As previously announced in ANR Update (December 13, 2011), ANR will be soliciting proposals for CE advisor and specialist positions. This supplemental call aims to address programmatic gaps that were not previously identified or that have arisen since last year’s process. The new call is posted at http://ucanr.org/sites/anrstaff/Divisionwide_Planning/Program_Planning_and_Evaluation/2012_Call_for_Supplemental_Positions/.

The online submittal system will be open from February 1–May 18 to allow as much time as possible for internal consultation and external input from ANR stakeholders in all program areas.

As mentioned, Program Council members have requested additional information for previously submitted position proposals that must address the “justification” section found in this year’s template. Both revised and new proposals are required to complete the “justification” section to identify critical issues that the position will address and explain how a proposed ANR position will address those issues.

The submission system will be open for both new proposals and for revision and resubmission of earlier proposals that were not previously selected for recruitment.  Existing position proposals will be available through the ANR Portal on February 1. If you wish to submit a new proposal, use the revised template found in the link in the first paragraph above. Specific instructions for both existing and new proposals will be available on the online system.

Filling critical academic positions remains a top priority for ANR. The resources released through retirements and separations will allow us to hire new advisors and specialists. We are taking steps to protect these funds for reallocation, and we anticipate that we will be able to continue to fill academic positions as resources allow.

Sincerely,

Barbara Allen-Diaz
Vice President
