2023-24 call for UCCE positions

I am pleased to announce the new 2023-24 Call for UC Cooperative Extension (CE) Advisor and Specialist positions. Building on the more than 100 CE positions released over the last couple of years, we continue to prioritize growing our academic footprint to provide the expertise needed to improve the lives of all Californians and address emerging and future needs. We plan to release 20 new priority CE Advisor positions and 10 new priority CE Specialist positions.

There are several phases with the same timeline for CE Advisor and CE Specialist positions:

  1. Identifying priority positions/connecting interested groups – until Dec. 18, 2023
  2. Proposal co-creation and submission – by Feb. 19, 2024
  3. Program Council reviews and develops recommendations – March 2024
  4. UC ANR Vice President makes final decision and releases positions – May/June 2024

Please see the 2023-24 CE Position Call webpage for more detailed process information and important documents, such as the required proposal template.

The processes for new CE Advisor and CE Specialist positions take a similar approach, but have different groups working together and submitting. As always, UC ANR strongly encourages engaging both internal and external stakeholders in identifying and developing proposals for priority positions. The process has been improved in response to feedback. The UC ANR Program Teams have an important role given they engage and represent the CE and AES (Agricultural Experiment Station) network including statewide programs and institutes.

  • For CE Advisor positions, County Directors and the Research and Extension (REC) System will prioritize in their regional teams and work closely with UC ANR Program Teams.
  • For CE Specialist positions, UC ANR Program Teams and the REC system will identity their top priority needs and campuses will select the position ideas that align with their academic planning. Working together, they will develop the proposals.

I look forward to seeing the proposals developed through this collaborative prioritization.

Regards,

Glenda Humiston
Vice President

ANR releases 16 UCCE Specialist positions

I am delighted to announce 16 UCCE Specialist positions will be recruited over the next 12 months. This is in addition to the five UCCE Specialist positions released last fall and two additional co-funded UCCE Specialist positions since May 2021 (one located at the Kearney REC in partnership with UC Merced and one position to be recruited in partnership with UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine). To date, 106 UCCE Specialist and Advisor positions have been released since this time in 2021 to grow the UCCE footprint, thanks to the increased 2021-22 state funding. We now have a position in UC Berkeley's School of Public Health. I also want to again thank the Program Teams for their review and input on the UCCE Specialist proposals. The Program Team prioritization and stakeholder engagement described in the proposals were critical to informing the release of these positions.

Program Teams also provided input on priorities.

Including those above, to date 28 UCCE positions have been released over the past three months. The full list is posted and kept updated on the 2021 Release of UCCE Positions web page. There is also a table of the overall staged process.

VP Humiston plans to announce additional UCCE positions in mid-November.

Later in winter and spring 2022, 70 or so more UCCE positions will be released as a result of the 2021 Call for CE Positions. The new position-proposal development process is underway. People across the ANR network have begun meeting and having conversations about priority proposals to meet current and future needs. Last but not least, along with the hiring of more than 100 new UCCE academics, UC ANR is investing in critical programmatic and administrative support to make the expansion of the UC ANR footprint successful. Directors have been updated on this plan. A brief, high-level overview will be shared broadly during the October 21 Town Hall.

Ten more UCCE positions released for recruitment

Following up on my July 20 announcement, I am pleased to announce 10 more UC Cooperative Extension positions are now released for recruitment. These positions are made possible by the historic 2021-22 state budget increase Governor Newsom approved in July. We are grateful to begin rebuilding the UC ANR academic footprint to address critical needs in our state. The newly released positions include:

  • #09 Orchard Systems Area Advisor, Tehama County (headquarter county)
  • #65 Nut Crops Advisor, Merced County (headquarter county)
  • #32 Invasive Weed & Restoration Ecology Specialist, UC Davis
  • #40 Water Justice Policy and Planning Specialist, UC Berkeley
  • Nutrition, Family, and Consumer Science Advisor, Central Sierra Multicounty Partnership
  • Nutrition, Family, and Consumer Sciences Advisor, Tulare County (headquarter county, supporting the lower San Joaquin Valley region)
  • Fire Advisor, Mariposa County

  • Agricultural Engineer Advisor, Intermountain Research and Extension Center (headquarter location)
  • Integrated Pest Management Area Advisor, Butte County (headquarter county)

The UCCE Advisor positions are multicounty positions. For positions with numbers less than 68, the full descriptions are available on the2018 Call for Positions webpage(note: some modifications may be made to meet present needs). The positions with no numbers were identified as current, high-priority needs through discussions with UC ANR leadership groups, including County Directors, Statewide Program/Institute Directors, and REC Directors. Program Teams also provided input on priorities.

In May 2021, Program Council identified 15 UCCE Advisor and five UCCE Specialist positions as critically urgent to fill from a list of the remaining positions from the 2018 position call process (updated in 2019) and more recent departures/priorities. To avoid overwhelming our Human Resources colleagues, the first 10 positions were released in July and this second set of 10 is being released now. We look forward to releasing additional positions for recruitment – both academic and program support members – throughout the next several months.

Glenda Humiston
Vice President
