Public Education Classes

Master Gardeners offer free classes most Saturdays of the year. No advance registration is needed in most cases.

2018 UCCE Master Gardeners of El Dorado County's January Classes

1/13 2nd Saturdays with Barry - Instructor: Barry Wold

A lot of things are happening in the winter vegetable garden. Master Gardener Barry Wold will explain various planting, thinning, and pest control methods as well as needs for the success of your vegetable garden during each month’s demonstration. This month, the topic will be “Cold Frames and Other Season Extenders.”

Note: $2 Parking fee for all days has gone into effect on campus.

The Sherwood Demonstration Garden has closed for the winter and will reopen in April. However, “Saturdays with Barry” continue every second Saturday of the month! 


1/27 The Beer Garden - Instructors: Sarah Robinson & Kelly Auville

Are you interested in taking your home brewing hobby to a new level? Add some unique character to your recipes by growing and using your own hops and brewing herbs? Join MGs Sarah Robinson and Kelly Auville, along with Placer County Master Food Preserver Roger Dillon, in a presentation of growing, harvesting, and drying hops and herbs.

2018 UCCE Master Gardeners of El Dorado County's February Classes

2/3 Spring and Summer Vegetables - Instructor: Zack Dowell

It's time to prepare the garden for the delicious spring and summer vegetables. Master Gardener Zack Dowell will discuss garden plant selection, planting times, site selection, soil preparation, proper seed planting techniques, and pest management.

2/3 Pruning for that Fabulous Rose Display - Instructor: Eve Keener

1 PM-3 PM The timing of rose pruning in our county is critical.  If you are a novice or need a review of the “whys, whens and hows” of rose pruning this class is for you.  Join Master Gardener Eve Keener for a workshop on this art and grow roses your neighbors will envy!  (Rain date: 2/10/18)

2/14 Eco-Gardening: Attracting Pollinators, Beneficial Insects, and Other Natural Predators - Instructor: Kit VeerKamp

An ecologically-sustainable garden is both beautiful and able to attract and sustain pollinators and beneficial insects, reducing the need for pesticides. Plant selection directly affects beneficial insect populations, those insects that can provide ecological benefits such as biodiversity and natural pest control. This concept of “habitat management” provides a refuge for the insects during winter, and nectar and pollen resources, leading to increases in pollination and populations of other beneficial insects that help control pests in the garden.

2/24 Backyard Chickens - Instructor: Heidi Napier

Join Heidi Napier to learn all there is to know about having your own backyard chickens!  She will cover choosing and raising chicks, behavior, handling, housing, nutrition and health problems in small flocks.

3/3 Developing a Vegetable Garden in a Small Backyard Setting - Instructor: Mike Pavlick

Master Gardener Mike Pavlick will cover site location, design, raised bed options, container gardening and other methods that will allow anyone to have a vegetable garden in a small backyard setting.

3/14 Citrus Mania - Instructor: Phyllis Lee

Come see how you can grow citrus successfully in our community.  Phyllis Lee will inform the novice and experienced citrus grower in what makes for successful growing in this county, what pests to watch for, how to protect during our cold nights, and harvesting.  A few recipes will be available for delightful treats that can be made using citrus.

3/24 Tomatoes from Seed to Table - Instructors: Zack Dowell, Judi Johnson & Cindy Young

Master Gardener/Master Food Preserver Combo Class. Master Gardener Zack Dowell will show you how to choose the right varieties, deal with insects and diseases, care for, and harvest your tomatoes.  Master Gardeners and Master Food Preservers Cindy Young and Judi Johnson, will talk about what you can do with your tomato harvest: canning, dehydrating and freezing.
