The purpose of the UC Master Gardener program is to extend to the public research based information verified by UC experts about home horticulture.

Interested adult volunteers go through a training and certification process which includes a 17-week training course and devoting 50 volunteer hours back to the program outreach the first year. Training topics include, plant botany, disease and insects, weed science, plant propagation, irrigation, soil science, home vegetable gardening, fruit trees and grapes, landscape trees, turf and diagnosing plant problems. Continuing Master Gardeners complete 25 volunteer hours and 12 continuiing education hours annually to maintain their certification in the program.

The University of California Cooperative Extension in Fresno County has an active group of nearly 200 Master Gardener Volunteers who support local educational programs in home horticulture by staffing a phone-in helpline, providing public educational classes and presentations, coordinating a Plant a Row for the Hungry program, maintaining a one-acre food production and ornamental demonstration garden, conducting plant clinics, and providing other educational opportunities
