Persimmons

  • Hachiya persimmon photo by bsterling
There are 2 kinds of persimmon trees that grow well in California. The Japanese persimmon (Diospyros kaki) and the American persimmon (Diospyros virginiana). The trees are deciduous and grow to 15 to 30 feet tall and wide.

There are many varieties; the fruit should be eaten when it is soft. The fruit will ripen off the tree. Most trees perform better and the fruit is sweeter when pollinated, especially with another variety.
