    Description: Very showy and fairly large upright, shrubby, flowering perennial; native to most of western US and northern Mexico

    Sun: Best in full sun

    Water: Drought tolerant, low water once established

    Soil: Well drained, tolerates sand and clay soil

    Habit and form: Densely branching shrub with soft, long light gray foliage; red tinted branches reach 2 to 4 feet tall    

    Flower type: Tubular with four deeply bi-lobed petals

    Flower color & bloom season: Bright orange-red flowers bloom summer to fall; blooms profusely

    Uses for plant and/or flowers: Attracts hummingbirds and butterflies

    Pruning time & method: After first year, trim back or shear in mid-winter to 1-2 inches tall for neat appearance the following season
