A short update on how workgroups, program teams and initiatives are working to increase ANR’s capacity to meet California’s needs. In addition, we will have a brief discussion of the Water Strategic Initiative.
8:15 am Measurement of Water-related Variables in Research and Extension Projects: Heiner Lieth, Loren Oki, Rick Snyder, and Ken Shackel: Part A: Lecture
This workshop will describe the basics of measuring variables related to water (water use, water quality and quantity, etc). Attention will be given to the "nuts and bolts" of this type of data acquisition including instrumentation, sensors, and loggers.

Various demos will be around the Putah Creek Lodge so participants can see and touch the sensors and instrumentation.

What is happening with the Irrigated Lands Regulatory Program? What is CV-Salts? Will there be a statewide nitrogen reporting requirement? Answers to these question and more will be presented.
1:45 pm Water Reuse in California – Regulatory and Management Issues: Jodi Cassell
In 2003, the California Water Recycling Task Force issued a final report to the Legislature that estimated that California could reuse up to 1.5 million acre-feet of water per year, meeting approximately 30% of household demand (including predicted population growth). While the state is encouraging reuse, regulatory requirements differ between basins and may discourage reuse. Speakers in this session will discuss regulatory and other issues that confound reuse in California, to be followed by an open forum to brainstorm and discuss ways that Agriculture and Natural resources could address this issue.

1:00 pm Water Banking: Toby O'Geen and Larry Schwankl
Groundwater overdraft is developing as a critical issue in California. While artificial groundwater recharge has been practiced in dedicated groundwater recharge basins, the use of production agricultural land for groundwater banking is relatively new. This session will explore groundwater banking using agricultural land through a short presentation summarizing the issue and its complexities. The remainder of the session will consist of an open discussion period designed to encourage greater awareness of the agronomic, hydrologic and policy issues related to agricultural groundwater banking.
