Fair Oaks Horticulture Center Workshops and Open Gardens

Sacramento County Master Gardeners at the Fair Oaks Horticulture Center maintain water efficient landscape demonstration gardens, fruit trees and bushes, a table grape vineyard, cane berries and blueberries, herbs, a vegetable garden, and a compost demonstration. Learn how to select, plant and care for edible and ornamental plants using University of California research-based, river-friendly practices.

Attend events and learn how to grow the best vegetables and fruit, conserve water and energy, nurture plant health to reduce the need for synthetic chemicals, and discover University of California resources available to help you prevent and treat garden pests.

Plant Clinics are held at all Workshops. Bring your plant samples, pest mysteries and questions. We'll help!

Open Garden Days are the ideal time to walk through at your own pace. Bring your list of gardening questions and get one-on-one advice.

January 19 Saturday 9 am-noon	Workshop - sponsored by Fair Oaks Boulevard Nursery Learn the correct techniques for pruning blueberries, cane berries, fruit trees, grapes and ornamental grasses. February 23 Saturday 9 am-noon	Open Garden Talk with Master Gardeners as they complete winter pruning ornamental grasses and dormant fruit trees. Learn the basics for starting summer vegetable seeds. Wander the gardens, ask questions.
March 16 Saturday 9 am-noon	Workshop - sponsored by Four Winds Growers Learn how amending the soil can benefit your garden. Watch how to set up and maintain a worm composting bin. April 17 Wednesday 10 am-1 pm	Open Garden Master Gardeners offer their time-tested gardening tips. Watch grape thinning. See how our raised beds are prepared for summer vegetable planting. Learn about perennial plant propagation.
May 18 Saturday 8:30-11:30 am	Workshop Learn techniques for managing pest insects, diseases and weeds that may be active at this time of year in your landscape. Find out how to easily attract beneficial insects to your garden. *Here are the speakers' times and topics for this workshop* (PDF 219kb).
June 15 Saturday 8:30-11:30 am	Open Garden Watch Master Gardeners demonstrate summer fruit tree pruning. See different methods for training and pruning grape vines. Taste ripe berries. Learn how to grow herbs in containers. Ask questions.
August 3 Saturday 8 am-2 pm	HARVEST DAY 2013 Sacramento’s biggest one-day gardening event. Featured speakers, demonstrations, educational booths, open gardens, produce tastings, a plant clinic and more. Bring your friends and enjoy!
September 21 Saturday 8:30-11:30 am	Workshop - sponsored by the Sacramento Rose Society Learn about incorporating edible trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals into your landscape. Understand worm composting (vermiculture). Hear about water-efficient lawn alternatives.
October 16 Wednesday 10 am-1 pm	Open Garden Learn about growing cover crops and how they can enrich your garden soil. Get tips for protecting sensitive plants from frost damage. Discover UC and Master Gardener resources that are available to you to help prevent and treat garden pests.
