Yellowjacket wasps

yellowjacket_2

Yellowjacket wasps (Vespulla pensylvanica) collected in our research monitoring jar. The larger individuals shown in the center of the image are reproductive queens. The reproductive queens forage outside during the early months in the season (April or May), it is typically to capture several reproductive queens in these monitoring traps. However, during the mid-summer and later in the fall, entire catches in the monitoring trap consist of workers only.
