It is also one of the earliest vegetables that can be harvested from your garden. Native to Europe, and the Mediterranean area this plant has been grown as a food for 5000 years. In America, Thomas Jefferson was quite fond of asparagus, growing it at Monticello. Asparagus is high in a number of vitamins and minerals, eaten raw, grilled steamed or baked.
