Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods is a non-profit, environmental and interpretive organization that works in partnership with California State Parks in the Russian River District to support volunteer, education and stewardship programs. They offer this 6 week, 40+ hour class to introduce you to the wonders the Sonoma Coast and engage you in the stewardship of California’s natural communities. Through the University of California Naturalist Program, participants become active members in a growing movement of conservation, citizen science, and volunteer activism. Our unique ecosystem offers a landscape where temperate rain forest meets Mediterranean chaparral.
Participants will explore the redwood forests, oak woodlands, and riparian habitats of California’s coastal mountains. Class lectures and field trips will venture from coastal ranges to the ocean, informing about coastal prairies, estuaries, and marine tidal zones. This course combines science curriculum, journaling, guest lecturers, daily field study, off site trips, and local cultural knowledge. The California Naturalist Program promotes environmental literacy and stewardship through discovery and action. Upon completing certification requirements, participants are eligible for four academic credits through UC Davis Extension for an additional nominal fee.
