The start of the 2020 pistachio season has been a mixed bag. Most of the southern San Joaquin Valley had decent chill hours, but heat units for bloom were a mixed bag and then we hit the 2.5” rainstorm from 4/5-9 during early bloom instead of February where it should have been. Leaf out was uneven and many young orchards, especially, had problems with blanking along last year's shoots. The cause is still uncertain but see Craig Kallsen's (Kern County Subtropical Advisor) latest newsletter for a good discussion (http://cekern.ucanr.edu/?newsitem=84945).

In addition to anchorage, a key role of roots is the uptake of water and nutrients. Although roots are responsible for water uptake, roots do not function well when exposed to too much water and will stop growing and eventually die in stagnant and/or saturated soil conditions. We consider how a better understanding of root biology can inform best irrigation practices.
When do roots grow?
There is a false understanding in walnut production that there is a flush of root growth in both spring and fall. In fact, there's even a figure in the 1996 UC Walnut Production Manual that shows these two flushes of root growth where the fall peak is larger than the spring peak. Recent work in the Chandler variety by Bruce...

The dates are among the world's oldest cultivated fruits, widespread throughout North Africa, the Middle East and Southern Asia. Over the last century, distribution has extended to the United States, South Africa, India and Australia. In general, the geographical distribution of commercial date production is limited to areas that can be described as arid and semi-arid and where there is abundant water supply. The best date palm growing regions are characterized by long, hot, dry summers with minimal summer/fall rainfall. In other words, long, hot and arid growing season is required for date palm growth and to develop, mature and ripen fruits. Early maturing varieties such as Mejhool and Deglet Noor in the California low...

Spinach is a fast-maturing, cool-season vegetable crop. In California, most conventional and organic spinach fields are irrigated by sprinkler irrigation. However, sprinkler irrigation could contribute to the speed and severity of downy mildew epidemics, as the most important disease in spinach, within a field when other conditions such as temperature are favorable.
Although fungicides are available for the control of downy mildew in conventional production systems, products with similar efficacy are not available for organic spinach. Adapting drip irrigation for high-density spinach plantings may be a possible solution to reduce yield losses from downy mildew and enhance resource-use efficiency in organic spinach...

Plants lose water through their leaves and it's called transpiration. People lose water off their skin and it's called evaporation or sweating. When a plant stops losing water and when people cant produce enough sweat to cool off, both overheat. The weather influences that drive this water loss - water that needs to be replaced or the bodies begin to go into heat stress - are the amount of light (day length, cloud cover), relative humidity (it dries faster when air is dry and slower when humid - think desert versus Florida), and windy (more wind, more drying). Temperature is important, but not as much as these other drivers. Think freeze-drying - a very successful process for removing water from...
