Volunteering at the MNT is a great way to learn more about Orange County's butterfly population as well as the native plants they depend on for survival.
/h3>What is there to do In the Garden in December? There is still time to plant those California natives.
If you do it now, they will be well established by the time the hot weather comes around. Check your irrigation system for leaks and possible upgrade. Plant bareroot trees, shrubs, vines, etc.
Prune deciduous trees and shrubs BUT if you find pest-infested wood, find out the pest is and be prepared to wait until Summer to cut out and dispose. This week is “This Month In the Garden” with UC Master Gardeners. MGs Katrina and Teena will update you with their delightful banter and give you tips and tricks and inspiration on what to do garden-wise this month.

/h4>/h2>/h3>/h2>This week on In the Garden with UC Master Gardeners, we have two subjects for you during the hour. This is the holiday season PLUS we are entering the season to plant bare root plants!
First, imagine you are invited to Thanksgiving dinner. What would make a nice hostess gift? How about bringing a gift from the heart! A living herb basket! Personalize it with the same herbs used in a favorite recipe. Write that recipe in your card and voilà!
Our own UCCE Master Gardeners Katrina Kirkeby and Teena Spindler chat for 30 minutes and bring you so many ideas. Secondly, Teena will speak with Gary Matsuoka, a local nurseryman, about one of the most time-sensitive tasks in the winter garden - planting bareroot nursery material. Soon will be that time once again and you'll hear what it takes to successfully plant and grow plant material which is sold, not in pots, but wrapped in plastic with limited moisture-retaining media. Proper planning is important so get your helpful hints here before venturing out to the garden center.
