So much growing in the garden this time of year! Ever wonder what to do with the edibles when it comes time to harvest?
Preserve it!
This week on In the Garden with UC Master Gardeners, we are replaying a valuable show from the spring of 2017. UC Master Gardener and KUCI Staff Host Katrina Kirkeby will discuss what the Master Food Preservers of Orange County do. Fellow Master Gardener Cinda Webb, the OC Master Food Preserver Program Coordinator, will talk with Katrina about methods of preserving including water bath and pressure canning, dehydration, fermenting, etc. Learn how to make Fruit Leathers! Here's a tip .. to peel peaches (or stonefruit), cut an X in the bottom and submerge the fruit in boiling water for about 30 seconds, then remove and submerge in ice water! The peel will come off nicely. So much to talk about so we will alert you to resources to follow-up on so you can plan what to do once your bounty is harvested.

/h4>/h2>/h3>/h3>/h2>This week on In the Garden with UC Master Gardeners, UC Master Gardener Host Kris Bonner speaks with Don Hodel, UCCE Advisor for LA County on how “Dried Out Yards are not a Virtue.”
Since the water restrictions of the last few years, many home gardeners are letting plants die and making landscape changes that are shortsighted, expensive, and even unnecessary.
Tune in to hear how to have healthy (and cooling, energy-efficient) trees, shrubs, and yes, even lawns, in times of drought and water conservation. This show was first aired in August of 2016.

/h4>/h2>/h3>/h3>/h2>What can the human population do to return to the sustainable existence of past cultures? One answer is Permaculture.
The three core foundations of Permaculture design are the ethics of EARTH CARE, PEOPLE CARE, and FAIR SHARE. Plain and simple! This week on In the Garden with UC Master Gardeners, MG and KUCI Staff Host David Letourneau will discuss this very important and impactful topic with Susan Krings, fellow MG from Riverside County.
Susan is also a Permaculture Designer so she will provide many helpful hints on, for instance, use of gray water (water used for other household purposes that is still suitable to be used in the garden – as opposed to black water), planning your land/plant placement (“spend 100 hours thinking for every 1 hour working”), and companion planting. The end result is the BEST result. NO WASTE! Join us!

/h4>/h2>/h3>/h3>/h2>How can you tell that a movie is set in Southern California?
Just look at all of the signature Southern California trees – the (mostly) NON-CALIFORNIA NATIVE Palms!
This week on In the Garden with UC Master Gardeners, UC Master Gardener Kris Bonner talks to Don Hodel, environmental horticulturist for the UCCE Los Angeles County.
They will cover everything about growing palm trees – selecting, feeding, and care. Palms are unique from other trees as they are monocots and don't form annual tree rings. They have been utilized for centuries for food, shelter, and shade. Learn all about caring for one of the most valuable elements in your landscape. This program first aired in Jun 2016.
