Happy/Merry Christmas everyone! Remember back when the In the Garden with UC Master Gardeners just started in 2014, each segment was 30 minutes long?
We will bring back two shows/subjects - tried and true and yet very topical. The first half hour will be all about ANTS!
These critters can invade your house at just about anytime of the year it seems. And in the garden, they actually “farm” other pests such as aphids. Where you see one, you probably have the other. MG Katrina Kirkeby lets you know a bit about who Master Gardeners are and about this weekly program before she has an exciting discussion with Dr. John Kabashima about Ants.
The second part has MG Teena Spindler talking with local nurseryman Gary Matsuoka about Bareroot plants and planting. Learn about roses (bareroot and container differences), cane berries, strawberries, and other fruit trees. Prepare for the new year to come In the Garden!

This week on In the Garden with UC Master Gardeners, your host, UCCE Master Gardener Teena Spindler, will talk to fellow Master Gardener Kay Havens about one of the most popular flowering plants in Southern California gardens.
The topic is Roses – Choosing, Pruning, and Care.
So many roses, so little space! So many PETALS, too! Did you know that English Roses with about 50 petals don't do well near the coast where it's cooler? But others with as few as four petals will do great. So learn the different types of roses to choose as the best for your garden space or use for the flowers.
Bareroot plants are available now so pick the best ones. To rejuvenate existing roses, learn pruning ABCs and steps to take now to control pests and disease all season. You can take the show right out to your garden and walk through the tasks with Kay as she tells you exactly what to do to get your roses ready for the coming year. This is a replay of a January 2017 show but is applicable EVERY year.
