This week on In the Garden with UC Master Gardeners, one of our newest KUCI/MG radio hosts Bill Brooks talks to the President of the California Gourd Society (CGS), Olive Moore, about the wonderful subject of hard-shelled gourds.
How indigenous cultures all over the world have used them in a practical sense to how the farmers or gourd growers supply the gourd artists of today is just some of the information shared with the public by CGS - a non-profit, charitable organization whose Mission Statement is : “To promote the horticulture, art, crafting and appreciation of the hard-shelled gourds (Lagenaria Siceraria).”

The first Thursday of every month on In the Garden with UC Master Gardeners, Master Gardeners Teena Spindler and Katrina Kirkeby will bring you special gardening information for the month.
In November, it really is time to prepare for colder weather. Once your Plumeria have gone dormant, stop watering until new leaves start to appear in spring.
Young citrus and avocados trees will need to have their trunks wrapped to protect from frost. Prune dense trees for the passage of Santa Ana Winds. Plant, pre-chill or force certain bulbs. Start thinking about strawberries, too. And of course, plant those California Natives and wildflowers. Katrina and Teena will discuss what they are doing in their own beautiful gardens and landscapes.
