“Put Your Best Foot Forward” with Playground Stencils

Roosevelt Elementary School joined efforts with UC CalFresh Tulare/Kings County, Mulcahy Middle School, Tulare City School District (TCSD) and Tulare County Department of Public Health to increase physical activity and learning development using playground stencils!

More than 20 stencils were painted on Roosevelt Elementary Kindergarten playground. The stencil project would not have been possible if it weren't for the wonderful volunteers.  More than 30 volunteers assisted in the stencil project including school teachers, parents, Mulcahy Middle school students, community members, and UCCE staff.

The art students at Mulcahy Middle School went above and beyond and created the snake, butterfly, flower, tree, and the rocket ship hopscotch stencil. Adding these unique stencils allowed the project to expand creatively! The students also traced the stencils a day before the project to increase efficiency the day of. Dr. Gist, TCSD Superintendent, supported the Roosevelt stencil project by providing paint and assistance from the district's maintenance department. Roosevelt Elementary School Principal, Mr. Felix, provided lunch to thank all the wonderful volunteers.

UC CalFresh, Tulare County Goes Back to School!

Back to School
UC CalFresh Tulare County is thrilled to start the new school year! We have attended five Back to School Night events to showcase the amazing work that our program is doing in their schools. In light of the new school year, all of the cafeterias have been updated with eye-catching nutrition corners. The nutrition corners focus on encouraging students to wash their hands to stop the spread of germs.

Tulare County Nutrition Educators promoted youth education, adult education, Smarter Lunchrooms, and school farmers markets. We also shared information about upcoming events such as the new stencils at Roosevelt and CATCH! We had fun teaching students about nutrition and provided a delicious, healthy trail mix taste test.

Dinuba Farmers Market

UC CalFresh has joined efforts in supporting Dinuba Farmers Market. The Farmers Market provides the community the opportunity to purchase more fresh fruits and vegetables using Market Match. Here is how Market Match works, simply look for the Market Match sign at the Farmers Market and use your CalFresh benefits to purchase fresh produce. If you spend $10 using your EBT, you get a $10 voucher, that is $20 worth of fresh produce for the price of $10! UC CalFresh will be providing nutrition education to the community of Dinuba. We will have an interactive MyPlate activity for children and adults to learn about making healthier food choices for their families.

The Farmers Market will occur every Friday until August 3, from 6-9 p.m. in Downtown Dinuba. Local farmers will be present providing the community fresh fruits and vegetables. Join us at the Dinuba Farmers Market as it is one of the best shopping deals around!

You Are One In A Minion!

UC CalFresh partnered with the AgVentures! Learning Center for AgVentures! Day. UC CalFresh performed a play called, "From Farm to MyPlate" featuring "Chef Farmer and the MyPlate Minion Chefs." As students walked in to watch the show they were welcomed by the Minions and were excited to see what they had planned for them. The goal of the show was to engage students in an exciting way while learning about the importance of eating from MyPlate. Students also participated in exercises led by the MyPlate Minion Chefs to pick tomatoes, boxing, pump, squats, and dance. Every student was seen having lots of fun while engaging in the show.

Parent Gardening

UCCE gathered parents from Earlimart Elementary School to participate in the school's memorial garden. Parents were given a designated garden bed and there they planted  cucumbers, tomatoes, bell peppers, and yellow squash. Parents worked together to clean out the weeds, fill fresh soil, plant vegetables, and water the plants. Parents were beginning to take ownership of the garden and showed interest in maintaining the plants. The parents will meet every Wednesday in the month of May at 8:30 AM. and will have the responsibility of maintaining their vegetables. We look forward to working with parents to engage them in their children's school garden!
