“Visit a nutrition booth at an event? No. They'll just lecture me. I know I'm not healthy.“
"Stop by the nutrition booth? No. I don't have time. Plus, that's boring."
These are some comments the public might have when it comes to nutrition booths. Because we want to change these comments and incorporate more physical activity, we are trying new carnival-type games when we provide nutrition booths at school and community events.
At one of my school's Open House events, I put together this fun and easy educational game. Since I was teaching the “Building Strong Teeth” lesson, I used the "sometimes" and "anytime" dairy pictures, bean bags, and Frisbees to create an activity for all of our participants (parents and students). During our visit, we reviewed good sources of calcium in order to have strong teeth and bones.

Last month students in our program tasted grapefruit! This gave students the opportunity to explore the differences between an orange, a lemon, and a grapefruit. They were able to taste and see the differences in flavor, color, size, shape, and texture, and they wrote about their experience.
During the tasting the students had lots fun! Thank you, teachers, for helping your students experience a new food.

UC CalFresh had a special visitor stop by to see what impact our nutrition program is having in Madera Unified School District. Ms. Nava's 2nd grade class at La Vina Elementary School learned all about “Varying Your Protein Food Choices" along with Congressman Jim Costa. This lesson focused on choosing a healthy balance of plant and lean animal protein foods every day. The students put their knowledge to the test during a group activity, where they helped each other sort out what foods come from plant sources and what foods come from animal sources.
Congressman Jim Costa joined the class activity to help the students figure out if their pictures were animal or plant protein foods.
Costa even participated in mixing together the Mango and Black Bean Salad recipe with Nutrition Program Coordinator, Angelica Perez. He began calling himself, “Mr. Mixer” during the recipe activity, which the students loved! A couple of students even asked for seconds from Mr. Mixer!
Students also joined in on an indoor physical activity called "Animal Charades" with Nutrition Educator, Austin Cantrell. They had fun acting out different animals without making a sound. Overall, the students enjoyed the experience and learned what Costa's role is as a congressman, and how he represents our Central Valley communities in Washington, D.C.

In January, Ayer students started their Food Friday Campaign with the goal of eating more fruits and veggies. A total of 559 servings of fruits and veggies were eaten during the four Food Fridays - way to go, Ayer Bears! Congratulations to Mrs. Lee's first grade class for having the largest increase of fruits and veggie consumption over the four weeks! Her class ate almost twice as many fruits and vegetables on the last Food Friday in comparison to the first.
To celebrate Ayer students' hard work with Food Friday, UC CalFresh hosted a MyPlate obstacle course! Check out all of the fun below!

Last week Ayer Elementary School kicked off their four week Food Friday campaign, which encourages students to eat the fruits and vegetables provided in the school lunch. Now through February 17th, classes enrolled in the UC CalFresh Nutrition Education Program will be counting how many students eat their fruits and vegetables, and tracking it using the cafeteria's new Nutrition Corner poster pictured below.
