Time, temperature and turning are critical factors
Compost can be a gardener's best friend. It can deliver dramatic improvements in soil quality and nutrients to nourish your plants throughout the growing season. But unless you use the right techniques,...
There is a lot of information out there! While looking for something else, I ran across a Western Farm Press article from last fall about Roundup Ready canola growing on roadsides etc. I've heard Doug Munier talk about this issue and I'm sure many of you have too. I though Harry Kline did a nice job of summarizing the issue so I thought I'd revisit it today.
The article can be found here: http://westernfarmpress.com/management/rr-canola-evolves-vexing-weed
Several years ago, Doug Munier (UCCE in Glenn Co) and Kent Brittan (UCCE in Yolo Co) were part of a team testing canola as an alternative crop in California -...

The latest developments in weed control will take center stage at UC Davis once again when scores of scientists, students, regulators and more gather July 14 for the 55th annual Weed Day.
“We look forward to another great turnout with a wide range of weed-control demonstrations,” said Cooperative Extension Specialist Brad Hanson from the UC Davis Department of Plant Sciences, who is chairing this year’s popular event. “Weed Day provides a great opportunity to see, first hand, weed research being conducted on campus and to find out what we are doing throughout the state.”
Among the presentations will be weed control in fresh-market tomato, residual herbicides in almonds and walnut orchards, symptomology of...
I gave an overview presentation on my research program today as part of the Plant Science Departmental Seminar series at UC Davis. I thought I'd post it here for several reasons:
1. There might be someone out there who is just dying to know what I do - here you go!
2. I thought the software that I used (prezi.com) was pretty slick and made a nice presentation (gasp - not PowerPoint?!).
3. I spent a bunch of time learning about this (pretty easy to use) software and wanted to see how the "embed" function worked (HTML code is generated and makes it easy to embed the presentation in online vehicles like blogs, webpages, and social media tools).
4. A "program...
I recently ran across an article from Western Farm Press (written last November) that I thought was interesting and worth reposting here.
The article, which was entitled "Weed Control: Communication with Farmers Essential", provided a synopsis of a journal article on the subject. (the scientific publication was in the Journal "Weed Science" and was titled "Investigating the Human Dimension of Weed Management: New Tools of the Trade").
Both the web article and the journal publication discussed the human dimension of how weed management decisions are...
