Colleagues,
To improve the working climate for UC staff, you may recall that earlier this year President Napolitano formed a working group to help address abusive behavior and bullying. In the attached letter, President Napolitano reminds us that the University does not tolerate abusive conduct or bullying.
In addition to clarifying policies regarding bullying, the Presidential Guidance provides best practices with regard to bullying prevention, the identification of abusive conduct in the workplace, and the resources available to staff when such incidents arise.
Please read President Napolitano's letter, which is attached, and the attachment containing her Presidential Guidance and the working group's report.
If you experience abusive conduct or bullying, please contact the ANR Human Resources Employee and Labor Relations team: Robert Martinez, at (530) 752-3467 or ramartinez@ucanr.edu, or Mary Roberts at (530) 750-1321 or maroberts@ucanr.edu.

Are you wondering about the results of the Work Environment Assessment conducted in 2012? Survey results have now been tabulated and analyzed, and they will be made available to you in a series of six workshops this spring. Workshops will be held around the state and location specific survey data will be presented at each one. Register for the workshop in your area at http://ucanr.edu/weworkshop.
The objectives of the workshops are to
- share results of the 2012 Work Environment Assessment
- engage in discussion about what it means to have a welcoming and inclusive work environment
- conduct a participatory dialogue on ANR values and how they might translate into Principles of Community. Identify 2 or 3 academic/staff employees to serve on a committee that will direct the process for finalizing ANR's statewide Principles of Community
- clarify the purpose and benefits of having a Staff Assembly for ANR. Identify 2 or 3 staff employees to serve on a committee that will develop a process for forming a statewide ANR Staff Assembly
All academics and staff (including county-paid staff) have been invited to participate in discussion of data from the Work Environment Assessment along with additional insights gleaned from prior listening sessions. Although the assessment data we have does not include campus-based CE specialists (they received the campus version of the survey), they have been invited to participate in our workshops along with the rest of their ANR colleagues.
Because we will be reviewing data specific to each regional grouping, attendance at each workshop is limited to those employees in that specific grouping. Please note that the administrative units in Oakland and Davis and at Kearney Agricultural Research and Extension Center (BOC-K) have their own joint workshop on May 20.
Dates and locations for each workshop are listed below. For more information, check the website at http://ucanr.edu/sites/wesurvey/.
- South, San Diego – Monday, March 2
- Central Valley, Kearney REC – Monday, March 9
- Sacramento Valley, Davis – Tuesday, March 31
- North, Redding – Wednesday, April 15
- Administrative Units (UCOP, Davis, BOC-K), Davis – Wednesday, May 20
- Coast, San Luis Obispo – Wednesday, May 27
Please plan to attend — a positive and welcoming work environment is important to all of us. Register today for the workshop in your area at http://ucanr.edu/weworkshop.

Dear Colleagues,
UC ANR has scheduled six workshops around the state to discuss the results of the Work Environment Assessment. In addition to sharing the assessment results and discussing their significance, we are taking this opportunity to move forward with the creation of an ANR Staff Assembly.
Register for the workshop in your area at http://ucanr.edu/weworkshop.
Workshop Objectives:
- Share results of the 2012 Work Environment Assessment, by regional grouping.
- Engage in discussion about what it means to have a welcoming and inclusive work environment.
- Take part in a dialogue on ANR values, and how they could translate into Principles of Community. Identify 2 or 3 academic/staff employees to serve on a committee to direct the process for finalizing statewide Principles of Community for ANR.
- Clarify the purpose and benefits of a Staff Assembly for ANR. Identify 2 or 3 staff employees to serve on a committee to develop the process for forming a statewide ANR Staff Assembly.
Survey results have been analyzed by regional groupings, and we are looking forward to engaging in discussions with you. Each regional grouping includes ANR employees located in county offices (including county-paid staff), at Research and Extension Centers and on the campuses. Administrative units from Davis, Kearney and Oakland will have their own workshop.
As you know, California is a very large state, and some people will have to travel further than others to reach the workshop site. Because we will be reviewing data specific to each regional grouping, attendance at each workshop is limited to those employees in that specific grouping. Please refer to the map to find your regional grouping.
CE specialists are also encouraged to engage with their colleagues in the workshop in their area. Campus-based CE specialists received the campus version of the survey, and unfortunately, we were unable to extract their data for analysis. Survey results for the Oakland-based staff, however, were extracted and have been merged with the statewide data.
Dates and locations of workshops by regional grouping:
- South, San Diego – Monday, March 2
- Central Valley, Kearney REC – Monday, March 9
- Sacramento Valley, Davis – Tuesday, March 31 – note new date
- North, Redding – Wednesday, April 15
- Administrative Units, Davis – Wednesday, May 20
- Coast, San Luis Obispo – Wednesday, May 27
Please register to attend – a positive and welcoming work environment is important to all of us. Travel expenses will be reimbursed according to ANR policy.
To register for the workshop, visit http://ucanr.edu/weworkshop. All workshops are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with registration starting at 9 a.m.
More information on the Work Environment Assessment is available on the website at http://ucanr.edu/sites/wesurvey. For specific questions, please contact Jan Corlett at jan.corlett@ucop.edu.

Dear Colleagues,
Two years ago you were asked to participate in a statewide survey regarding your work environment. Survey results have been tabulated and reviewed. While the Work Environment Assessment Committee was discussing survey results, we realized that ANR has no formal or consistent mechanism to get feedback from staff. an ANR Staff Assembly would provide that mechanism.
A staff assembly would promote effective communication between staff employees and the ANR administration. An ANR Staff Assembly would provide forums where staff at all levels can discuss UC ANR and University issues of mutual concern, and offer opinions and recommendations to the administration on policies, processes and programs.
For more information, click on the links below. Let us know if you are interested in being involved in the ANR Staff Assembly by filling out a 1-minute survey by January 26. If you have questions, please contact Jodi Azulai at jlazulai@ucanr.edu.
Who has staff assemblies in UC?
How would an ANR staff assembly benefit ANR staff?
What are the main functions of an ANR Staff Assembly?
Who would establish the ANR Staff Assembly?
How would staff volunteers establish the ANR Staff Assembly?
Who can be a member of the ANR Staff Assembly?
What personal benefits would I gain by being a member of the ANR staff assembly?

Sincerely,
Your Work Environment Assessment Committee

Last month Vice President Barbara Allen-Diaz wrote to you about ANR's follow-up plans for the Work Environment Assessment. Six workshops have been scheduled around the state. Please plan to attend the one in your region and mark it on your calendar. Prior to each event, invitations, a registration survey and more information will be sent.
Please remember that California is a very large state, and in scheduling workshops, some people are going to have to travel farther than others. We also understand that not everyone will be able to attend, and we will plan to share information with everyone later in the spring. The regional groupings, the location of the workshop, and the date are listed below. See the map on the website at http://ucanr.edu/sites/wesurvey to identify which counties, RECs, campuses and administrative units are in each grouping:
- South, San Diego – Monday, March 2
- Central Valley, Kearney REC – Monday, March 9
- Sacramento Valley, Davis – Tuesday, March 31
- North, Redding – Wednesday, April 15
- Administrative Units, Davis – Wednesday, May 20
- Coast, San Luis Obispo – Wednesday, May 27
Please plan to attend – a positive and welcoming work environment is important to all of us.
