Plantada en una esquina del campus de UC Davis se encuentra una exhibición sobre tecnología y cultivos de verduras que los investigadores del Laboratorio de Innovación Hortícola han estado usando en granjas de África, Asia y Centroamérica. Encabezado por Elizabeth Mitcham, de UC ANR's, del Departamento de Botánica de UC Davis, este programa aprovecha la experiencia Agrícola de una red de investigadores universitarios de los Estados Unidos para mejorar la forma en la que los agricultores en los países en vías de desarrollo cultivan frutas y verduras.
Con bastante frecuencia, el aprendizaje es mutuo: la adaptación de soluciones para los granjeros en otros continentes puede despertar ideas que pueden ser útiles localmente.
Así que mientras el Centro de Demostración del Laboratorio de Innovación Hortícola fue construido para mostrar el trabajo internacional a los visitantes del campus, usted no sería el primero en preguntarse si “¿esta tecnología funciona también en las granjas de California?”
Recientemente un equipo de Extensión Cooperativa de UC en el condado de Fresno, dirigido por Ruth Dahlquist-Willard, asesora de pequeñas granjas de Extensión Cooperativa de UC en los condados de Fresno y Tulare, trabajó con el Laboratorio de Innovación Hortícola para aprender a elaborar una de estas tecnologías para poder probarla con los granjeros locales.
La tecnología a bajo costo que construyen, llamado “secadora solar de chimenea”, combina un flujo continuo de aire con calor solar para secar frutas y verduras frescas con mayor eficiencia que una secadora solar tradicional. Fue diseñada por el dúo innovador de Michael Reid y Jim Thompson, ambos especialistas eméritos de Extensión Cooperativa de la UC quienes han trabajado en múltiples inventos con el Laboratorio de Innovación Hortícola. La secadora solar de chimenea se construye usualmente con materiales básicos, como madera, plástico oscuro y transparente y malla de grado alimentario. He aquí un vistazo a un par de otras tecnologías que los visitantes pueden ver en el centro de demostración:
Este cuarto frío propulsado por energía solar usa una herramienta llamada CoolBot, diseñada por un granjero estadounidense. En un cuarto bien aislado, un CoolBot puede lograr que un aire acondicionado para casa baje la temperatura lo suficientemente necesario para el almacenamiento en frío frutas y verduras frescas. Si las frutas y verduras se enfrían inmediatamente después de ser cosechados en el campo se pueden reducir las pérdidas post cosecha y extender el tiempo de almacenamiento. Los equipos del Laboratorio de Innovación Hortícola han usado el CoolBot con granjeros en Tanzania, Zambia, Uganda, Tailandia, Camboya, Bangladesh, India y Honduras.

La cámara de frío cero energía (conocido por sus siglas en inglés como ZECC) es una simple estructura construida con ladrillos y arena que puede ayudar a enfriar frutas y verduras frescas, en condiciones en donde los aires evaporativos son efectivos. Al mojar la arena y los ladrillos con regularidad, los granjeros y hasta los vendedores pueden mantener bajas las temperaturas y humedad para productos como lechugas y otras verduras de hojas. Los investigadores del Laboratorio de Innovación Hortícola han venido probando condiciones específicas, como climas calientes y áridos con fácil acceso a agua, para convertir esta en una herramienta efectiva para que los granjeros la puedan usar para enfriar sus frutas y verduras frescas.

Las recientes visitas al Centro de Demostración del Laboratorio de Innovación Hortícola llegaron en muchas diferentes formas y tamaños, desde personas que caminaban por las inmediaciones quienes se pararon a leer algunos de los letreros, a actividades en grupo planeadas con anticipación. Recientes recorridos del centro han incluido a una delegación de decanos de las facultades de agricultura de Etiopia, un equipo de medios informativos de Tajikistan y estudiantes de preparatoria de California que están aprendiendo sobre innovación y diseños enfocados en la humanidad.

Si está cerca de UC Davis, hay dos eventos a los que el público está invitado para celebrar el Día Mundial de los Alimentos:
- La serie de oradores sobre el programa De la Granja al Tenedor ofrece a los participantes un almuerzo y una discusión a fondo sobre las conexiones entre la salud de la tierra, de la granja y los alimentos saludables y la cantidad de microbios en el intestino. Estos temas son particularmente pertinentes en este Día Mundial de los Alimentos, así como también lo es en el Año Internacional de los Suelos. Daphne Miller hablará sobre el libro "Farmacology" (Farmacología) y luego se unirá a un panel de académicos de la Estación de Experimentación Agrícola de UC ANR, específicamente Kate Scow y Bruce German, moderado por Tom Tomich. Este evento es particularmente pertinente ya que el tema de este año del Día Mundial de los Alimentos se enfoca en la forma en la que la agricultura puede romper el ciclo de la pobreza rural.
