Join the ANR monthly town hall meeting 2-3 p.m. on Thursday, July 15, to learn more about the Accellion data breach. Our guest speakers will be Hoyt Sze, managing counsel of the Health Affairs & Technology Law Group at UC Office of the President, and Michael Bruemmer from Experian. Sze will provide a summary about Accellion. Bruemmer will discuss measures to protect data.
UC sent individual notices on June 30 and July 1 to employees whose personal information was impacted by the Accellion event where contact information was available. Notifications were sent via USPS mail where UC has a current physical address. If the University does not have an individual's physical address on file, but does have an email address, they sent the notification via email. The email comes from “The University of California” (no-reply@marketing.csid.com). For more information, visit ucal.us/datasecurity.
VP Glenda Humiston will give an update on the 2021-22 budget and return to work in offices.

UC ANR COVID-19 safety standards updated with new requirements
To ensure that UC ANR's safety standards conform with UC guidance and with the State's guidance for Institutes of Higher Education, the Emergency Response Team (ERT) has prepared the Modified Stage 2 Safety Standards, Addendum #2. The addendum must be attached to each location's site and program-specific safety plan and the updated information must be shared with the employees and volunteers working at your location.
Some of the new information of note that is included in this addendum:
- New stricter guidance regarding face coverings/masks
- Face coverings/masks are required when: a) interacting in-person with any member of the public; b) working in any space visited by members of the public, regardless of whether anyone from the public is present at the time; c) working in any space where food is prepared or packaged; d) working in or walking through common areas, such as hallways, stairways, elevators, etc.
- Face coverings may be removed when working in a private office or workspace that is inaccessible to the public.
- No indoor meetings (for Counties on State Monitoring List or experiencing widespread disease transmission)
- Enhanced investigation and follow-up protocols on COVID positive employees now required
- Monthly review/update of Location Safety Plans now required
- Discontinue use of drinking fountains – water bottle refill stations may still be used
- Ensure implementation of distancing/access controls – such as signage to mark 6' distances in any waiting areas or barriers to control access at reception desks, etc.
- All visitors must now complete symptom screening when coming onsite
We continue to monitor changes in the state's guidance and will adapt UC ANR's safety standards as necessary.

Celebration Corner
Summer 2020 presented an opportunity to re-imagine activities for 4-H programs throughout California. With in-person events and overnight camps cancelled, 4-H staff and volunteers forged ahead to plan engaging virtual camp experiences. Two examples of their success were the “Our Wild California” and “4-H Grown at Home” virtual summer camps. Each week-long camp engaged more than 100 youth in online learning about anything from fire science to Zentangle. Another success was the 4-H Virtual Code Camp presented by the California 4-H Computer Science Team; more than 60 students learned from teen-led coding activities for varying skill levels. Additionally, more than 70 Latinx youth participated in the first virtual version of the annual California Juntos Academy that included sessions on career exploration and navigating higher education.

Can you believe we are winding down week 5 of our remote work? Yet, I remain equivocal about my opinion of the work arrangement, despite not being as impacted as many. No doubt this would be much easier if everyone else in my household would just go back to their normal activities so that I could work at home alone. However, always in search of the upside, I am pleased to learn of the environmental benefits observed just over the last month as a result of removing commuters from the road during work and off times. If I look past the dairy farm next door to my house, I have a fantastic view of the snow cover on the Sierra from my work place. I can't always see the mountains, but I suspect the range is visible now, in part, due to reduced traffic in California. I can't help but wonder how many of us will rethink our behaviors now that we can ‘see' the difference a change makes.
I managed to escape any Zoom meetings yesterday! What a nice break. I made good progress getting some things checked off my ‘to-do' list. I spent a fair bit of time reviewing academic advancement packages, five for the day. Following, I managed to wrap up a few communications, catch up on emails, and still managed to procrastinate on my strategic plan homework. Soon we will have a new Accomplishments document out, but first I need to review the draft. I have a mandatory training still awaiting completion as well. The weekend or next week look promising.
The reprieve from Zoom meetings didn't last long; today was full of Zoom meetings beginning at 7 AM. The best meeting, of course, was the Town Hall meeting where we heard from representatives of three teams that had adjusted to the new normal in ways that may be permanent because they can see the long-term, post-COVID-19 benefits of the new practice or process.
The Western region Agriculture Experiment Station Directors met today. The updates provided by most states were rather depressing. After hearing from several during the Town Hall webinar how grateful there are to work for UC ANR and have a job, I definitely concur! We in UC are so fortunate in that we are far better off than several, if not most states in the Western region. One state even uttered the work I fear most – ‘exingency'. The whole conversation reinforced my perspective that while times are a challenge and our work environments not ideal, we are fortunate. Even though I struggle with interruptions, cold feet, an ironing board as my stand-up desk (too short for my height), a need to adjust my work hours, and poor internet I can work remotely indefinitely if the alternative is not working at all.
