What an interesting article, Dustin! I am embarrassed to say that I can relate to the feelings of biting bugs... thankfully, for me, I was able to figure out the problem. Last winter, I developed what I thought were bug bites... so, I convinced myself that there was something in my bed. After a very thorough inspection by the local pest inspector, it was clear I did not have any "bugs." Also, at the same time, I seemed to be getting pink eye. My eyes were sealing themselves shut and it was getting very painful. After a visit to the local opthamologist, the diagnosis was extremely dry eyes. Lubricating eye drops took care of that. Finally, I started to put all the clues together. I slept with a sleeping blanket and a dry heat radiator was always on low in my bedroom. Very dry skin itches! I was the "bug!" Very dry eyes try to create moisture, but because they were so dry, they were creating gunk. No pink eye there. So this winter, I will be setting up another appliance in my bedroom, a humidifier!

My solution to the dryness problem: I have a large brugmasia plant in the living room which drinks pints of water daily and transpires them into the air. No more dryness, no noise from a humidifier and magnificent flowers as a bonus!
